Some figures concerning wind turbines
Dynamic development of the wind power sector
Wind energy continues to grow at a steady pace in almost every country in the world, with average annual growth of around 10%. Although 2022 marked a slowdown, global growth remains impressive: installed capacity reached 906 GW in 2022, an increase of 378 GW in just five years, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
The European Union is well positioned thanks to its active renewable energy development policy. In 2023, it had 205 GW of installed capacity, covering around 17% of its electricity consumption. Growth is expected to continue with an annual installation forecast of 18 GW for the next five years, according to WindEurope.
In Belgium, approximately 1,780 wind turbines are in operation, representing a total capacity of 5,509 MW. In 2023, the onshore wind farm will have a capacity of more than 3,247 MW, divided between Wallonia (1,421 MW) and Flanders (1,826 MW). At sea, the offshore wind farm located in Belgian waters maintains an installed capacity of 2,262 MW.
